Gains are continuously being made in access to education and training for women. These gains are being made across the board.
In 1906 shortly after Federation, there were 142 women (13%) among the 1054 students at Sydney University and 128 women (15%) among the 853 students at Melbourne University.
Now, more girls than boys complete school to year 12 level and more women than men participate in higher education overall: in 2003, women made up 54% of all higher education students.
- In 2004, women comprised 57 per cent of Advanced Diploma/Diploma and Bachelor Degree students and 51 per cent of Post Gradutate Students
- There were 141,700 women apprentices and trainees in training at September 2004.
- Over 80 per cent of young women who enter Years 7 and 8 go on to undertake Year 12 education.
