Women's National Leadership Initiative
The Government provided $2.4 million over four years to extend Government activities to increase the participation of women in leadership positions and to promote leadership by women in other areas, particularly rural, indigenous, marginalised and disadvantaged women.
Background
The government's initiatives over the past three years have contributed to the steadily rising numbers of women who have been appointed to Commonwealth Boards and bodies, and this is encouraging. As at June 2004, women held 32.2 per cent of board positions under Australian Government control.
The additional funding will provide the capacity to upgrade the current OfW Executive Search arrangements to identify women with appropriate skills and qualifications for Australian Government boards and bodies. The work will build on the strengths of the current system which has recently been evaluated. The strategy will:
- establish and maintain a quality database and executive search service;
- identify specific sectors where women are under-represented through consultation with leaders in the field;
- undertake projects to increase women's participation in decision-making; and
provide a more comprehensive service to Ministers and the broader community in assisting them with board appointments of suitable women.
- Sport Leadership Grants for Rural and Remote Women
The Sport Leadership Grants Program for Rural and Remote Women is a joint initiative of the Office for Women and the Australian Sports Commission. The program is aimed at providing women with an opportunity to undertake accredited sport leadership training in the areas of coaching, officiating, sports administration and sport management.
